The "Tackle Box" with Bob Poley and Roger AldagWelcome to the 'Tackle Box' with Bob Poley and Roger Aldag. Here you will read about fishing from the perspective of these former Saskatchewan Roughrider Offensive Linemen, who are avid anglers, former teammates and great friends. They were both born and raised in Saskatchewan - Bob from Prairie River, located in northeastern Saskatchewan and Roger from Gull Lake, located in the Southwest Saskatchewan.
This pair became friends more than 35 years ago when they began their football careers with the Regina Rams, then their CFL careers with the Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Club. Back then they competed on the field, but now prefer spending time on the water. Bob and Roger will share their fishing memories, tips and opinions in this section on a regular basis, so check back soon for future entries and updates.

Bob and Roger Answer Your Questions!
Installment #3
Bob and Roger, tell us about your time out fishing in Saskatchewan this summer. How did you fare? Were you able to take any trips together?
Roger Aldag:
"Bob and I went out on about four different occasions to fish on Last Mountain Lake near Regina Beach, at the Buena Vista boat launch where there’s about 10-12 feet of water. We trolled up and down that area with bottom bouncers, leaches and worms. We had great success.
"We caught a lot of nice walleye. The bite was a little later this year than in the past because of our extended winter and by the later part of June they were really biting. It was a lot of fun. We caught a variety of sizes, which bodes well for that lake. Later this summer I might head back home (southern Saskatchewan near Gull Lake) and see if I can catch a few brook trout.
"Bob’s a very patient fisherman, and I think patience is good. Big Bob always preaches to change your line every year, which isn’t rocket science but is very valid, so I always take that advice from him. We caught a lot of good fish this summer and most of them are back in the pond, and that’s the way it should be.
"We did have a couple snacks though, they’re not all back in the pond. We had a couple of fish fries this summer, one at my place and one at his. Bob does an excellent shore lunch. I have to give credit where credit is due, and he does the best cooking in that big wok of his."
Bob Poley:
“During the spring walleye run at Last Mountain Lake, Roger and I went out a few times. It’s always nice to get out there with him and he was driving (the boat) for the first time, which was good because then I could just concentrate on fishing…and I caught lots! The one time we went out I think we caught about 25 fish in under an hour, but of course we only kept our limit.
"We used a few different kinds of bait, and a slow presentation on the troll. Sometimes I’d pop on the jig head, but the hot item was the live rigs with the leaches, worms, spinning rigs and bottom bouncers.
"I’m glad to hear Roger likes my cooking from my big deep frying wok. It’s a pretty simple recipe:"
Bob’s Deep Fried Fish
Into a large zip lock bag add:
½ cup Rice Krispies, ground up
1 cup flour
Seasoning salt, to taste
Cajun seasoning powder, to taste (optional)
"I pat dry the fillets, and shake them in the mixture. I don’t use any egg because I like them lightly battered. Pre-heat some canola oil (not too hot but the fillets should sizzle) and drop the fillets in there for 30-40 seconds (depending on the heat) until they’re lightly browned, you just don’t want to overcook them.
"I also spent some time up north at Hunter Bay in July. We caught walleye, trout and pike in about 40 or 50 feet of water. The trout fishing was excellent, caught quite a few 18-20 pounders. Because the ice was out late the fishing got really good a little later than usual."
